๐Ÿ– Bratwurst with Sauerkraut (Fried Sausages with Sauerkraut)

Description

Bratwurst is one of the most recognizable dishes of German cuisine. Juicy meat sausages paired with aromatic sauerkraut make for a simple, filling, and truly home-cooked meal.

๐Ÿงบ Ingredients (serves 2-3)

For the sausages: 

 German Bratwurst sausages - 4-6

 Vegetable oil or butter - 1 tbsp 

 For the sauerkraut: Sauerkraut - 500 g 

 Onion - 1 Apple - 1 (optional, but very German)

 Vegetable oil - 1 tbsp 

 Bay leaf โ€” 1 

 Black pepper โ€” to taste 

 Water or broth โ€” 100 ml

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ Preparation

1๏ธโƒฃ Sauerkraut

Finely chop the onion and coarsely grate the apple. Heat the oil in a frying pan or saucepan and fry the onion until soft. Add the apple and sauerkraut and stir. Add the bay leaf and season with pepper. Pour in a little water or broth. Simmer over low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2๏ธโƒฃ Sausages

Heat a frying pan with a little oil. Add the sausages and fry over medium heat, turning frequently. Cook for 10-12 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through.

Place the sausages on a plate with hot sauerkraut next to them. Classic accompaniments: mustard mashed or boiled potatoes a slice of rye bread
